Malaysian Cup Competitions Explained
Alongside the Malaysia Super League, Malaysian clubs compete in domestic cups. The Malaysia Cup is the oldest and most celebrated, the FA Cup is a knockout competition, and the Piala Sumbangsih is a one-off season opener.

Malaysia's domestic cups
| Competition | Type | Role in the season |
|---|---|---|
| Malaysia Cup | Cup competition | The most prestigious domestic cup, with a long history |
| Malaysia FA Cup (Piala FA) | Knockout cup | Open to clubs across divisions |
| Piala Sumbangsih | Single match | A season-opening match between leading teams from the previous season |
The Malaysia Cup
The Malaysia Cup was first contested in 1921, as the Malaya Cup, making it one of the oldest football competitions in Asia. For generations it was the centrepiece of Malaysian football, contested largely by state teams, and its final remains one of the biggest occasions in the domestic calendar.
The Malaysia FA Cup
The FA Cup (Piala FA) is a knockout competition organised in Malaysia since 1990. Like cup competitions elsewhere, it gives clubs from different levels the chance to meet, and a single tie can decide a team's run.
The Piala Sumbangsih
The Piala Sumbangsih is Malaysia's charity shield: a one-off match that opens the season, traditionally played between the previous season's league champions and a cup winner.
